This article was written per an invitation from IBM Research Labs, and was awarded the $25,000 first prize at their competition.

In the dark cold night in 1933 a young German man on a motorbike was running for his life.

The young man’s name was Leo Schaudinischky. He was an engineer specializing in the new science of electro-acoustic. Leo was a newly wed to a beautiful wife named Eva, and in December 1932 they had a baby girl they named Ruth Riva.

In 1933, when the Nazis rose to power in Germany, some local Nazi thugs knocked on the young couple’s door demanding that Eva will surrender her Jewish husband. Eva refused. Around that time, Leo’s audio shop was also vandalized. A local policeman, who…
